RACE REPORT:

Iron Mike – 12th September

This year's Iron Mike was held in almost ideal conditions, sun shining, lightish breeze, several angry magpies, a few dead wombats and 49 keen riders. Tony Weir was the hare for the day, 50 minutes ahead of A1 and he remained in the lead for the first lap although they were all closing in on him. A1 and A2 had joined together and there were a couple of E graders hanging on to the C and D machine as they forged their way into the hills for the second time. At the end, C Grade had the best of the day with Ian McVay first home followed by Dale Kleeman and Des Brown a minute behind. Steve Crispin had the fastest time of all and eclipsed

Peter Marshall's extraordinary effort from last year by more than a minute. Communications along Uriarra are difficult at the best of times and impossible at the end of the bitumen even with satphones. Phil Coulton volunteered to provide trail car services which turned out to be of particular benefit for Mike Spoljaric who had a flat on the return leg.

The Winners

1st Ian McVay, 2nd Dale Kleeman, 3rd Des Brown

A big thanks to the Marshals: Adam Carmody, Michael McGurgan, Dennis Jessop, James Curran, Dean Groenig, Alex O'Shea, Phil Coulton and Henry Beaverstock for his expertise in controlling the starts and finishes.

The apparent ease of conducting the race was due in no small part to the Marshals arriving early, particularly with events in the ACT requiring so much extra preparation with setting up signs etc., and I thank everyone for their contributions.
