RACE REPORTS:

Criterium Race Report – 23rd October

Fine conditions drew a spectacular field of 127 riders, inspired by the knowledge that as of Sunday night we’d all won the same number of Tour de France titles as Lance Armstrong. The post race drug tests detected traces of triumph, disappointment and plenty of exhaustion but thankfully no angst, as the big bunches passed each other without incident. The communication was great and the respect for other riders shone through.

A larger than usual field greeted the starter in G grade. Bruce Jones was never far from the front and held off strong challenges in the sprint from Mayumi Takeuchi and Antonina Bolschelarski for the 10 points.  F grade was a game of chess, but James Cruden had the moves to defeat Matt Malone and Sean Smith in the run to the line. Club newcomer Steve Beaumont was a revelation in E grade, going off the front early and gobbling up the F grade bunch before crossing the line first.  Elizabeth Lowe and Lloyd Bennett had the best of the big bunch finish.

In D grade George Pongracz showed improved sprinting form to take the win followed by Ben Davis and Peter Metcalfe. Bradley Sellwood was too strong in the C grade sprint, ahead of David Lander and Edward O’Farrell.  B Grade was the biggest field of the day and featured plenty of attacks. However the pack came together for a hard fought sprint, taken out by Tom Hartley, Andrew Chamberlain and Chris Nolan.  A grade was another fast and furious contest,  with Nick Boylan again handing out big doses of pain.  But it was the sprinters’ day, with Trevor Rix saluting the judge followed by Sean Iffland and Paul Angelatos.

Thanks to Henry Beaverstock for making sure the event proceeded smoothly despite the bumbling efforts of the race director, and to those who helped with the marshalling at various times.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “The riskiest thing you can do is get greedy.”  Lance Armstrong.

Thanks to Mick Donaldson for refereeing.

Call for Volunteers – Tour de Femme

The Tour de Femme is a women's only 20km ride that is both a race and participation event.  Each year the ride attracts around 500 competitors.  This year's event is being held on Sunday November 11th 2012. The race route starts and finishes in Yarralumla Bay and loops around though Yarralumla, Commonwealth Ave, Parkes Way, Lady Denman Dr and Adelaide Ave.

To ensure the event is run smoothly and safely, we need the help of approximately 30 people to direct riders and control traffic. If your wife, girlfriend, daughter, grand mother is racing why not come and support them by making their race safe!  You can also cheer them on as they ride past your Marshalling point.

You will be needed from approx 7:30am and should be finished by 11am. There's no better way to spend a Sunday morning!

No experience necessary, you will be given clear instructions and supplied with all equipment on the day.
