RECENT RESULTS:
Stromlo Crits, 17 January 2012.
It was warmer than usual but a big field of 103 nonetheless turned out to race into the heat and a stiff breeze on the main straight.
In A grade the Downing-Connor partnership came adrift, permitting Michael Payne and Sean Ifland to dispense with the rest, including David Rae who again finished 3rd. Paul Connor had to be content with 4th. In B grade, John Thorn was once again in the thick of battle, but this time had to give precedence to Simon Junakovic and Paul Angelatos at his powerful best - but the B grade bridesmaid for a third time in a month.
The D race became a sprinters' paradise with few demands made until the last 10 minutes when the standard Diesel motors began to fade, leaving the end game to the supercharged Andrew Gersback, who celebrated his first Vets' win over race favourite Ben Vagnarelli and the rapidly improving Brian Senior. C grade's pace also seemed leisurely at times, but they made amends by overtaking the D bunch then letting their flyers loose: Peter Merrick made it two wins in a row; Craig Pearsall had his best result to date; and the ever durable Jim Davey was third. Bianca Mauch took fifth spot to become the evening's First Lady. Peter Young, having only his second start, lay in wait 'til Sunday.
In E Bob Perkins swapped last week's placings with Kelvin Alley while Brian Chugg, a model of consistency, held on to third ahead of Alex Sommariva. The F grade race produced an all Committee podium with Dennis Puniard in advance of Graham Hendrie this time and Phil Coulton claimed third. Barbara Bayliss was again in the points in fifth place. G grade provided intimate competition with only 3 starters in the heat of the day. Lindsay Graham thrived in these circumstances to defeat Helen King.
Many thanks for an entirely successful programme to director Kirsti McVay, Ian McVay and Henry Beaverstock.
Stromlo Points (Teams) Races, Sunday 22 January, 2012.
In this teams event some folk imagined they could simply win all the required points by treating it as an individual time trial. And this they proceeded to do. In the combined A/B race Mark Harris and Niel Skipper, challenged bravely but briefly by Chris Short, got away after Chris Nolan snatched the first prime. Eventually Mark left Neil behind as well, but they both maintained wide gaps to the toiling bunch in their wake. It became a rather long procession, but there was some life after death in the rear. Rod Bates sprinted impressively for 7 points and Brad Tuohy, who had only recently topped C grade, performed two Herculean feats.
Mark Harris was so far in front that those languishing in the tail of the peloton could be forgiven for believing that they were being passed by another of their kind. Thus Brad, finding his second wind, locked onto this passing missile for most of a lap before becoming suspicious. A polite inquiry of Mark confirmed that he could be breaking the law. He then glued himself to Neil Skipper whom he managed to match for a rather long interval. Lee Hopson also had the honour of escorting the Skipper machine for a small part of his solo journey.
In the C grade race it was Peter Young who made winning look like a careless stroll in the park, and he separated himself so early from the bunch that we hardly noticed he was away. The pursuing bunch continued to scrap as if his absence mattered not, and valour was observed in the ranks. Jim Davey worked tirelessly to harvest 10 points (vs Peter Young's 11) for his team; Brad White, Alex O'Shea and Vince Dunn collected the chaff. Terry Moore was always prominent and would have owned a few more points but for the man away. In D, Ben Vagnarelli was not quite so far ahead, but he kept winning and smiling throughout. Lee Sheather and Ashley Sked combined to amass 13 points to his 12, but Ben had productive accomplices in Seymour Savell-Boss and Adrian Keogh who sealed the deal with an additional five points.
The E grade racers were closely matched and maintained a solid group throughout, but Mark Stevenson still managed to dominate, winning an impressive 10 points for his team. The opposition nonetheless achieved the better team result with Alex Sommariva (8), Robert Brooks (5), David Gunther (4) and Ian Morton (3) sharing the success. F troop split into two camps under pressure. with Ian Shaw dominating the individual points with a huge total of 14. Still, team Hendrie/Meredith + Visitor prevailed in the end with their total of 17 (vs 16 ) - the closest contest. G grade again provided intimate racing, with all three competing for individual rather than team honours. Angelika Mauch and Lindsay Edwards slugged it out with Angelika ultimately prevailing with 13 points to Lindsay's 12.
NOTE: Full results for all events are, as usual, available at http://rms.actvets.cc/ but note that the rms does not show results for first time 'novice' riders wearing 700 numbers, who nonetheless participated and scored points for their respective teams.
THANKS: Graham Hendrie, Barbara Bayliss and Richard Gorrell combined to manage this event. They were admirably supported by Bianca Mauch, indispensible in her role as monitor but aided by Team TLC members when they were not racing. They combined to keep track of the numbers, ribbons and placegetters all morning.
