RECENT RESULTS:

Stromlo Crits, 24 January 2012.

125 starters (a crits record?) made for vigorous competition throughout an almost perfect evening.

In a talented A grade field, Felix Pirie established the early break which eventually drew Ian Downing out of the bunch on a long and punishing pursuit. This suited the hunters nicely, and Steve Jones evenutally emerged to skip away at the finish ahead of the ensnared Ian, harried mercilessly by Mark Harris in third place. John Thorn finally established his supremecy in B grade, after an annoying sequence of second placings, but Brad Tuohy had a brilliant ride to fill the space left vacant, relegating Rohan Verco and Paul Angelatos to 3rd and 4th.

In C, anyone could now guess that Jim Davey would be there in the final sprint, and so he was again, in second pozzie, chasing newcomer Tony Rowley. Immediately astern were others noted for their consistent goodness: Andrew Chamberlain, Steve Schwenke and Vince Dunn. Had there been a ladies' C grade, Terry Moore, Janine Ridsdale and Bianca Mauch would have filled the placings in that order. In the huge D grade field of 27, Selwyn Snell demonstrated his fitness for higher duties by sprinting away at the start. He attracted a couple of acolytes for a time, but like the rest of the pack they had to ultimately concede his superiority. As a result the pace was brisk throughout but not enough to deter the muscular sprinters lurking in the rear. These chaps, bested by Peter Harding, took command in the final straight to dismiss the rest. Lee Sheather, who can sprint at will, provided a highlight: having danced with the devil out front for too long, she fought on in the pack to finish a very impressive fifth.

In G grade a continuing and very interesting rivalry was again played out. This time Lindsay Edwards powered away from Angelika Mauch for victory, thus earning a coveted Handicapper's award with free passage to F grade next time 'round. David Duffield, having his first outing with the Vets, looked the likely winner for almost all laps but the last. One to watch. In E, Bob Perkins was also the beneficiary of a Handicapper's promotion in recognition of his long-term and continuing contributions to that grade. This time he won handsomely from the now sprightly Alex Sommariva and a rapidly improving Ron Parello. They were not so far ahead of a strong ladies' contingent led by Linda Stals (5th), Elizabeth Lowe (6th), Belinda Wren (8th) and Jane Jones (9th). Ladies were also a force to contend with in F grade where they filled every second placing to tenth behind the consistent Ian Shaw. Belinda Chamberlain, in only her second start, took second; Barbara Bayliss occupied fourth, Pauline Thorn 6th, Jing Huang 8th and Marianne Geoghegan 10th.

A quick check of the season points score shows Angelika Mauch leading the women's competition, but only 6 points ahead of Jing Huang, and Brendan Byatt (128) comfortably ahead of Graham Henrdrie (104) and Ian Morton (103) in the men's division.

THANKS: Graham Hendrie, Barbara Bayliss and Richard Gorrell combined forces again to manage this event. They received generous support from Alain Arnaut, Henry Beaverstock and Angelika Mauch.

Stromlo Time Trial, Sunday 30 January, 2012.

40 dedicated time-trialists turned out in wonderfully warm weather to improve on their previous best performances. In A grade Les Ridsdale made one of his all-too-infrequent appearances to deny Reinhard Mauch the top spot by a mere 11 secs. over the 20km course. In B, Aaron Sedgmen claimed a larger margin of 38 secs. over Damien Clarke, who must have accidentally put himself 12 secs. clear of the Handicapper. In C, Charles Nicolls achieved a time that would have set him ahead of the B grade bunch. Paul Angelatos (logging yet another second place) and the rest were rather distant in arrears. In D, a methodical Jeff Culnane showed the way home again, by 50 secs over Ben Robey. Dale Teddy did the same to E grade, but with a massive 2:35 advantage over Jim Cruden and Pat Rooke in the largest field of the day. Belinda Wren was the fastest lady and the winner of F grade with a handy 25 secs. to spare over Ian Shaw, and David Gould returned to push the air better than his G grade companions. John Barlow and Cameron Emert formed the only tandem team and achieved a very respectable time of 32:35.

THANKS: To Race Director Vince Dunn and his willing corps of assistants: Bianca Mauch, Pal Welsh, Jack Hermes, Jim Davey and Graham Hendrie.
