Racing Cette Semaine:

Saturday, 7^th July: Dalton

Where: Quarry on Dalton Rd just East of township.

When: 1:30 pm.

Sign on: 15 mins before scheduled start time wearing your registered number.

Race Description:

Dalton - Gunning - Boorowa Rd ABCD do 2 laps Dalton to Gunning 1st Dalton U Turn at Start area. EFG do 1 lap. Then all head west on Boorowa Rd to end of bitumen (3k) and return to Dalton then north on Rugby Rd to end of bitumen (5k) and return to finish in Dalton.

Help Needed on Saturday: Ian will need a three road marshals, lead and trail car drivers and helpers at the finish line to run the race. Please contact Ian if you can assist.

Don’t forget to bring your helmet with you when you signon

To meet new AVCC rules, the club will be required to meet the following conditions for racing;

· Helmets – All members must wear helmets that meet Australian Standards. Competitors must present their helmet for inspection prior to the race to confirm it has one of the Australian Standards approval labels (shown below) and is in good condition.

· Bikes – Bikes must be roadworthy. Bikes will be checked for independent front and rear brakes and fitted with handlebar plugs.

· Racing Jerseys must cover upper arms and shoulders.

· Race Number: All riders must wear race numbers. To assist in an emergency, contact details should be recorded on the race number.

Lookout Coteau, Directeur de Course’s report

A cool Canberra day, without any of the predicted rain, saw 66 riders turn out at Lookout Hill.

Good to see most grades had bunch finishes. Always feels good to finish in the bunch.

Only 3 DNFs and pleased to report no mishaps or punctures (as far as I know). We had Don Hare in attendance as First Aid Officer who mentioned he had a massage table in his car if needed so maybe any future strains could be treated at the end of the races assuming all the First Aid Officers are similarly equipped.

Profil membre des anciens combattants – Ian Morton

It’s my turn to provide a profile;

How long have I been a member of ACT Vets?

Since 2007.

What is my favourite course in the ACT Vets racing calendar and why?

My definite favourite is the Crit Track. I love the close quarter riding, the tactics, the sprint and best of all, no hills!

What Grade did I start in with the Vets?

I started in F Grade. I dropped down to G Grade for a while then worked my way up to spend a while in E Grade.

How long have I been cycling?

I started riding when I was at school but gave up when I got my first car.

What got me interested in cycling?

I had played soccer for 27 years until my knees gave out on me. Once I was forced to quit, I needed to do something to try and get fit. I dusted off an old mountain bike in the back shed. I think my first ride was a whole 4km. I gradually worked up my distances and then started participating in events like Round the Bay in a Day and the Hartley Challenge.

One News Eve Party I was chatting to Allan Bontjer, who I used to play soccer with. He mentioned the ACT Vets, so I thought I’d try out a bit a competitive racing. I think in my first Crit I only lasted 1/3 of the race.

What was my most memorable ride?

The Hartley Challenge, a three day ride up from Canberra to Charlotte’s Pass and back.

What is/was my favourite bike?

My current bike – an Azzuri

Where do I work?

The Optus office in Civic.

How do I find the time to train?

Summer is nice because I can get out after work. Winter is a bit more difficult trying to get out at lunchtime.

Do I have a special training regime?

Not really. I try to get out for a ride when I can. The hard part is trying to make the time.

What does my family think of my cycling?

My wife is always concerned about me falling on my head.

An interesting fact about me;

My first car was a Morris Minor 1000.

Race Referees

The other change required by the AVCC is that all future racing must be conducted by club registered Race Referees. The race committee is asking for volunteers to take on the role. The Referee should be knowledgeable in the rules of the AVCC, and the club, and be willing to enforce those rules to the benefit of the club and its members.

These members will be put on a rotating roster to undertake their duties throughout the year, with consideration given to obligations. Each referee will receive their membership for the year that they are roster at the clubs expense.

As everyone has already joined for this year we will wave all future race fees for the rest of the year for all this years rostered referees in lieu. The need for volunteers is a matter of urgency and we must be able to meet this requirement before the start of the winter season when the new policy will take effect.

The important question to be asked is what happens if we don’t get the minimum number of referees. The race committee will be forced to reassess the calendar and reduce the number of races.

First Aiders

One of the other items that the Race Committee need to follow up on are those members who are current holders of a First Aid Certificate who are will to register to aid the club in this role.

This does not preclude the rider from racing, or performing any other duties, but it is a requirement of the insurance that we know who these people are should we need to call on their services.

It is also important to note that should anyone wish to get their certificate the club will pay the costs involved.
