RACING THIS WEEK:

Tuesday, 9th October: Stromlo Criterium Scratch Race

Where: Stromlo Forrest Park

Sign on: 15 mins before scheduled start time wearing your registered number.

Race Description: G Grade@ 5:45 - 8min + 2 laps; A/B Grade@ 6:02 - 23min + 2 laps; C/D Grade@ 6:31 - 16min + 2laps; E/F Grade@ 6:55 - 12min + 2 laps

Crit Marshals and Helpers needed

Due to the fact that vets crits are now so popular (some weeks getting over 120 entries) each week we will be asking for at least 4 marshals (helpers) to help the race referee - 1 at the sign-in desk, to check helmets and sign-in, 1 to help on the start line, to watch the track and finishing sprint, 2 for the finishing chute, to record finishing order for the different grades.

Marshalls are able to race on the night so you and a mate in a different grade, can share the job. If we do not get helpers races will not go ahead.

Please let James know if you can assist.

Crit Grade Ribbons

To help the referee and your fellow riders know which grade you are in, everyone will be allocated a coloured ribbon to be pinned to your race number. These will be available for pickup at the sign-in desk. If you are upgraded or you choose to ride up, collect a new ribbon.

The colours will be:

• A – hot pink

• B – fluro orange

• C – fluro yellow

• D – purple

• E – fluro pink

• F – blue

• G – none

This is the first race of the summer Criterium season. Below are a few points you can do to help the referee make the evenings run smoothly.

Register to race no later than 15 minutes before your scheduled start time

Be in the marshalling area (the concrete area in front of the sign-in desk) 5 minutes before your scheduled start time.

Do not warm up on the track. Do that up on the road.

Wear your race number.

Enter into the grade determined the Handicapper – see the RMS for your Criterium Grade, it may be different to your Road Racing grade. You can compete in a higher grade but not in a lower grade. Contact the Handicapper before the day of the race to request changes.

Finish the final lap quickly (so the next race can start) and get in ‘finish line order’ prior to entering the Chute.

Track Racing 2012-2013 Season

QUEANBEYAN TRACK PRACTICE SESSION

THURSDAY 11 OCTOBER 6.00 PM

ALL WELCOME - DONT MISS IT!!

The 2012-13 Track Racing season will kick off with a practice session on Thursday 11 October at the Queanbeyan track. There will be no racing. All interested riders are invited - particularly new riders and track novices. It is a great opportunity to give track a try!

Note:

· Queanbeyan track is located in the park in Central Queanbeyan (behind the police station);

· Track & road bikes acceptable;

· New riders can get practical advice on gearing, bunch riding & track etiquette;

· Interested riders can try out a track bike;

· Experienced riders can tune up the machinery & motor;

· All riders can express their preference for events & races;

· The practice session will be around 1hr 30 mins;

· There is no formal structure to the practice. You can do your own thing.

· We hope all riders will later adjourn to a selected Cafe to discuss the coming track season.

A few basics on track etiquette for the practice session:

· If you are cruising around the track, ride high (next to the rail);

· Tempo riders use the centre of the track;

· Use the inner track if you are circulating fast or sprinting;

· Hold your line - don't make any sudden changes of speed or position;

· Be very careful if you are crossing or moving on / off the track;

· Start from the fence and be aware of riders approaching;

· Be careful braking on road bikes. Remember the track bike on your arse has no brakes!

Regular track racing will start on Thursday 18 October.

REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE

The organising committee for the 2012-13 Track Racing season would like to keep two spare track bikes on tap for roadies and novice track riders to try. If you have an old (preferably steel framed) track bike gathering dust in the garage, the committee would greatly appreciate the loan of your machine for the track season.

ACT Veterans Member Profile

In our next member profile we look at we look at Polly Templeton;

How long have you been a member of ACT Vets?

Since November 2011

What is your favourite course in the ACT Vets racing calendar and why?

Honeysuckle Road - I like long slow hills once my legs have settled in and won my grade.

What Grade did you start in with the Vets?

G - while I was put up to F due to winning Honeysuckle Road, I am unable to keep up with the bunch so tend to stick with G grade.

What do you like about racing with the Vets?

Exploring more of Canberra and the surrounds and hopefully improving my cycling speed.

How long have you been cycling?

4 years

What got you interested in cycling?

Being a part of Females in Training (FIT) but only ever having run, I was persuaded to do the novice triathlon training program in early 2008 where I learnt to ride a road bike and also learnt to do freestyle.

What was your most memorable ride?

My first ride with the Vets where I had a flat just after turning at Tharwa going up the steep hill. I eventually managed to get the tyre back on and completed the ride even though almost everyone had packed up and gone home.

What is/was your favourite bike?

I started off with my sister's hand me down Peugeot bike which she had used for triathlons in London in the early 2000s. Then for a Christmas present from the family in 2011 I was given a Giant TCR Advanced which I love.

Where do you work?

Three days at the National Museum of Australia, one day for a bookkeeping company working at Catholic Social Services and another day for the Bikeshed doing the bookkeeping.

How do you find the time to train?

I only manage to fit in two rides apart from the Vets race, for an hour and a half on Wednesdays and Fridays at 6am with FIT, although during winter we have substituted these rides with two indoor spin sessions.

Do you have a special training regime?

Every morning is training for one of three disciplines although I usually need one morning off. The regime is: Monday, 6am swim 1.5hrs; Tuesday, 6.30am run 1hr; Wednesday, 6am ride 1.5hrs; Thursday 6am swim 1.5hrs; Friday, 6am ride 1.5hrs; Saturday race; Sunday rest or ride.

What does your family think of your cycling?

I am single so don't have a family. However, my brother and sister are both runners, with my sister also having done a few triathlons. They are always interested in how I am going with my triathlon training.

An interesting fact about yourself;

My main love is being Auntie Polly and spending time in Sydney with my niece Gemma who is 6 and nephew Toby who is 4, hence the reason why I miss so many races.
