RACE REPORT:

Cooks Hill Graded Scratch – 11th May

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, 67 keen cyclists did the pilgrimage to Yass for a few hours of suffering. G grade left first, followed by A grade down to F. All started in a cheerful mood as it was a rolling start to the top of the hill where the real business would begin. After a hectic rush to get the race organized, we waited at the finish line for the competitors to come back. We were tossing between who would arrive back first, would it be E or A grade to cross the finish line first?

It was to be E grade, with Ivert Elton and Lin Hou who arrived on a tandem a minute ahead of Merrigan Terence and third Phil Anderson another minute back.

The tough course took its toll as most of the riders came back individually, some just rolling to the line.

Next to arrive were the two A grade riders, Crispin Steve and Hartley Tom who had dropped their bunch before the B Turn, an impressive feat

The B grade tandem was leading by two minutes the only bunch sprint we had ,which was the combined grades A and B, as B grade caught up to the A grade riders as they must have been slacking off.

Paul Connor won the sprint convincingly, followed by the never aging Reinhard Mauch.

C grade was won emphatically by Teddy Dale three minutes ahead of Kleeman Dale, a further four minutes later Mark Taylors crossed the line a very tired look on his face.

D grade was won by McGlynn Brian ,closely followed by Kevin Hennessy and Richard Bourne been third doing very well after a long break from racing.

F grade had a nice roll to the finish line with Sue Frost leading the grade.

G was pretty much the survival of the fittest as we had four DNF one due to mechanical, nevertheless it was a long day on the bike for these riders and they were glad to have finished the course.

I would like to thanks David Row, Don Desmet, Rosemary Robinson, Jeff Culnane, Mike Haye, and Graham Hendrie and a special mention to Sandy Anderson who volunteered on the day. Thank you also to Henry Beaverstock who was helpful to set and operate the timing devices. All volunteered early in the week which made things very easy for me.

Cheers.

Thanks to Alain Araut for Race Refereeing.
