RACE REPORT:

M&H Age Standard Time Trial - Lookout Hill –28th Sep

The M & H Trophy Age Standard Time Trial has been a regular annual event almost since the club started. Unfortunately it had to be cancelled on Saturday due very strong gusty winds. According to the BOM weather observations, maximum gusts of 67 km/hr occurred around 1:30 pm and at Lookout Hill it seemed even stronger than that as the wind funnelled down through the hills around Point Hut and Tharwa.

About 20 members, mostly keen time trialists, turned up expecting to race but once they set out on their bikes for a warm up it soon became evident that it would not be safe to ride let alone enjoyable. Amongst those who ventured out to test the conditions on the road towards Tharwa were Angie Wren, James Jordan, Sue Powell and Peter Klein. Angie was blown right across the road at one stage and called it quits straight away. Fortunately there were no cars around at the time. Sue and James both with disk rear wheels must have taken off like an Americas Cup catamarans and they too were rather reluctant to try their luck in a real competition. So with the birds flying backwards and the cyclists going sideways it seemed like the best alternative was to head off home and watch the AFL grand final.

For those members not familiar with the origin of some of our trophy races, M & H stands for Marilyn and Henry ie; Beaverstock. Henry, our dedicated starter and finish line time keeper is a founding member of the club and many years ago sponsored trophies for men and women in an age standard time trial. The age standards for a long time tended to favour the more mature club members and hence were a bit of a disincentive to compete for those at the opposite end of the age spectrum. As an incentive to encourage their participation Henry supplemented the M & H trophy pool with two more cups for fastest time in the men and women categories. Two years ago age standards were adjusted slightly to reduce the seniors bias, so now with a total of four trophies and six medals for podium places on offer the M & H TT is worth the effort for all Vets members.

Many thanks to those who volunteered to help on Sat even though their services were not required. The lineup of marshals included Phil Anderson, Jim Cruden, Brendan Byatt, James Meredith and of course Henry who will hopefully have the opportunity to present his trophies soon when the race rescheduled to a date yet to be decided. Kev Hennessy, custodian of medals, deserves a commendation for safely delivering the medals and the fastest time trophies to Lookout Hill by bicycle into headwinds that even he as an ex sailor had difficulty in describing adequately..

Thanks to Graham Hendrie for Race Refereeing.
