Crit Season Start

This week marks the start of the Summer Crit Season. Due to the limited daylight at the beginning (and end) of the season, we will be running a Super Crit format with two races combining E/F/G in one race and A/B/C/D in the other.

Track Season Start

QUEANBEYAN TRACK RACE

THURSDAY 17 OCTOBER 6.00 PM

ALL WELCOME - DONT MISS IT !!

The track racing season will start this Thursday 17 October at the Queanbeyan track. Official Practice starts at 5.30 PM and racing will start at 6.00 PM. All interested riders are invited to enjoy an exciting and informal style of racing on Thursday evenings.

Note:

+ Queanbeyan track is located in the park in Central Queanbeyan (behind the police station);

+ Track & road bikes acceptable;

+ Normally 3 – 4 short events per session with a mixture of scratch, handicap, sprinting and team events;

+ Riders frequently adjourn to a selected Cafe after racing.

A few basics on track etiquette for the warm-up:

+ If you are cruising around the track, ride high (next to the rail);

+ Tempo riders use the centre of the track;

+ Use the inner track if you are circulating fast or sprinting;

+ Hold your line - don't make any sudden changes of speed or position;

+ Be very careful if you are crossing or moving on / off the track;

+ Start from the fence and be aware of riders approaching;

+ Be careful braking on road bikes. Remember the track bike on your arse has no brakes!

RACE REPORT:

Yass Graded Scratch – 13th October

On a cool Sunday morning the ACT Vets meet in the faraway place of Yass. On top of Cooks Hill 40 riders lined up to face the adventure to come. D grade departed first, followed by C, B and then A. They were told that they would be riding 70 kms. After these grades were out of site, F Grade departed , followed lastly by E grade. They thought they would ride 36km. The G Graders must have wanted a sleep in because none turned up.

As soon as everyone was on their way the day got hotter, the wind started and the magpies swooped. This was only the 2nd time to do this race route so the locations of the turn points proved to be tricky. Fortunately the quick thinking lead car driver realised there was an error and re-directed the riders so they wouldn’t end up in Cowra.

After 75km the convincing winner of A Grade was Tom Hartley, followed by Mark Harris and Marc Vroomans. B Grade winner was Nick Boylan, then Chris Nolan in a close sprint with Mark Gillett. The C Grade was the closest sprint finish with Terry Moore pipping David Wilkinson, followed by Dale Teddy. D grade saw Jessica Baird the clear winner, followed by Kevin Hennessy and Phil Walker.

For the lower Grades they ended up riding 46km. E Grade saw Terry Merrigan win, Rosemay Robinson 2nd then Jon Barnes. F Grade was won by Ian Albrey followed by Frank O’Sullivan. 3rd place has been awarded to Phill Coulton as he was in third place before he stopped to help with the turn points.

Thanks to the helpers – Jim Davey, Ben Davies, Ross Robinson, David McCook, Robert Wilson, Bruce Goodspeed, James Meredith and Henry Beaverstock.

Thanks to Pat Rooks for Race Refereeing.
