Important Update Regarding Marshals and Race Fees
Recently members would have heard a number of rumors regarding our road races and the use of trained marshals. Well the rumours are true. We can no longer hold our races without appropriately trained marshals.
The ACT government now requires all cycling events to have qualified road marshals where there is likely to be interaction between cyclists and other road traffic. This has put a lot of pressure on organisations like ACTVETS to ensure we have suitably qualified marshals for our events.
As a result of these changes, Roads ACT is providing a free Road Marshaling course, complete with the appropriate ACT-recognised certification over the coming months. There may not be enough courses initially to help all of the clubs to have an adequate number of members trained so we may need to engage contractors for a few months in the ACT.
We have been advised there will be a training day on Saturday 26 July and further training dates in September and October. If you would like to become a qualified marshal, please register your interest at Secretary@actvets.cc
To assist the club with the cost of engaging contract marshals to allow us to hold races in the interim the committee at its meeting last week decided to increase road racing fees to $10 each race. This increase is for all road races ie the ACT or NSW. This increase has only been approved up to 27 September 2014 at which time the committee will assess the situation further.
The race committee is also reviewing our race program for the remainder of the year to assess any changes that can be made to minimise the financial impact on the members and the club. For each road event it has cost approximately $800 for professional marshals which is an amount that we cannot sustain in the long run.
