Notes from AVCC Meeting
I attended the Australian Veterans Cycling Council General Meeting held in Perth on Tuesday 30 September as the President is away overseas.
The formal minutes have not yet been released but the following are some notes I can provide you where it affects ACTVETS Cycling Club members.
1. To the joy of our tandem riders the AVCC have voted to allow tandem bikes to compete in club events.
2. Disc brakes are banned on ALL BIKES being used in races under the jurisdiction of the AVCC until a decision is made by the UCI regarding their use for competitive racing.
3. The proposed name change to include the word “Masters” was rejected.
4. A referees training course is being developed on the lines of the ACTVETS course, we will keep referees posted on any proposed changes to what we have previously completed.

ACTVCC Secretary
NARRABUNDAH TRACK PRACTICE SESSION
WEDNESDAY 8 OCTOBER 6.00 PM
ALL WELCOME - DONT MISS IT !!
Please Note: Due to the cost of hiring the track and the requirement to have professional first aid in attendance, all track sessions will incur a $10 race fee.
This year the club’s track racing season will utilise the refurbished Narrabundah Track. Please note that this is a high-banked, oval track suitable only for conventional track bikes with a high bottom bracket. We will be unable to accommodate road bikes on this track.
The track racing season will kick off with a Practice Session on Wednesday 8 October. There will be no racing. All interested riders are invited - particularly new riders and track novices. It is a great opportunity to give track a try!
Note:
+ Narrabundah track is located off Goyder Street in Narrabundah;
+ Only track bikes are acceptable;
+ Many of the club’s track riders will be trying a high-banked track for the first time;
+ New riders can get practical advice on gearing, bunch riding & track etiquette;
+ Interested riders can try out a track bike (bring your own pedals and shoes);
+ Experienced riders can tune up the machinery & motor;
+ All riders can express their preference for events & races;
+ The practice session will be around 1hr 30 mins;
+ There is no formal structure to the practice. We will arrange some introductory training;
+ You can do your own thing, if you prefer.
A few basics on track etiquette for the practice session:
+ Use the designated track positions for cruising, tempo or fast pacing;
+ Hold your line - don't make changes of speed or position unless you are clear of other riders;
+ Be very careful if you are crossing or moving on / off the track;
+ Start from the fence and be aware of riders approaching;
+ All riders will need to be cautious as there will be many novice riders at the practice session.
If the practice session goes well, regular track racing will start on Wednesday 15 October. If riders are having difficulty adapting to the new track, we may schedule an additional practice session on 15 October and start racing a week later.
More information has been posted on the club website at http://www.actvets.cc/track
Renovation and repair of "The Bundahdome"
Renovation and repair of sprinters lane in turns one and two will begin on 27 October and be completed by 5 November.
The contractors have advised that they expect the track to be available for use on the intermediate weekend (1,2 November).
Vets track racing organisers will meet soon and advise on the season plans after the initial practice sessions
Fitz's Challenge – 26 October 2014
Canberra's biggest and best known long-distance one-day cyclo-sportive participation event on sealed rural roads in hilly terrain in the southwest of ACT.
Challenge yourself over 255 km, 205 km, 165 km, 105 km or 50 km – these are serious physical challenges to test your capabilities. (The 205 and 255 km rides qualify as Audax rides for those interested).

Ride 2 Remember
It is the inaugural Ride 2 Remember, scheduled for November 2nd. It's purpose is to get the Australian public to think about the contemporary veteran when they take their minutes silence on November 11th, and to fundraise for their support in the lead up.
There will be 30km and 15km circuits around the Lake, which will finish at the Australian War Memorial Rides will start from 8:00am and wrap up by lunchtime. We want to encourage families and social groups along, and it sounds like your group might enjoy participating for a social event(even though it may be a bit short by your standards and is not a timed race!). This is the first year we are running the event and would love to get as many participants supporting our cause as possible.
