RACE REPORT:
Uriarra Graded Scratch – 11th July
With a bit of a breeze, 9 degrees and the possibility of nasty weather 15 riders showed up and raced. The overnight forecast had been bad, so a lot of people probably decided not to race the evening before on the basis of the forecast. As it turned out conditions were not too bad, although there was a 5 minute shower mid-race. Due to the small numbers we ran a graded scratch instead of a Teams Race, shame about that. I hope the schedulers give the Teams Race concept another try.
A and B raced together and 4 of the 5 riders stayed together most of the way to a sprint finish. A was won by Marc Vroomans and B by Aaron Sedgeman who actually crossed the line first.
No C Graders turned up, where were you? D and E raced together in a field 4 riders. Two riders Warwick Wilson(D) and David Gunther(E) got away early and rode together most of the way with those two winning D and E Grades.
There were three riders in both F Grade and G Grade and we saw Ian Morton winning in F and Lindsay Graham crossing first in G.
Those who weren’t there missed out on seeing the latest innovation in mud-guards fitted to Rob Langridge’s bike. I never thought I’d see them on a racing bike, but you might have seen them in the Giro. A great idea in a bunch ride or race and keeps your back dry. Some traditionalists were not convinced.
Congratulations to all who turned up and raced. Thanks to Marshalls John Paul De Sousa, Dennis Jessop, Kim Malcolm and John Wilson. A lot goes into organising these races, getting approvals and signage on the course is now very involved, so let’s get out there and make all that effort worthwhile. A consequence is that the racing should now be safer than ever.
