MARSHALS NEEDED

Thus far we don’t have enough volunteer’s to cover the various positions and as such this puts the smooth running of the event at risk. We need at least 3 more for Saturday and 4 more for Sunday. If you are willing to help, please contact Ben at: bdavis@internode.on.net

Marshals

Ben Davis will be the Race referee for the two days. In order to run the event, he still requires 3 or 4 Marshals to assist.

Payment of $25 per day is available to offset petrol costs and other expenses. As it may be difficult to purchase lunch from the café’s in between the events it may be prudent for marshals to bring their own lunch and water.

Portaloo

A Portaloo has been booked. We are looking for a volunteer to help with towing duties. If someone is staying in Gunning on Saturday evening and would be able to tow it back to their accommodation overnight, that would save having to tow it back to Canberra.

Requirements

The cost will be $30 for the race and you must be a current member of the club within the AVCC. Please note that we do not have day licences available.

Riders will need to bring their helmet to the registration desk for inspection. Please note that it is an AVCC requirement that all riders must wear a helmet which meets Australian Standards.

Riders must have started the previous stage to compete in the next stage. (i.e. if you don’t ride Saturday then you cannot start on Sunday)

DAY 1: Saturday 7th May 2016

Prologue

All grades will complete the same 4km course – this is the traditional course starting from the top of the hill and heading northeast along the Old Hume Hwy towards Breadalbane.

Prologue will start at 10:00am and riders will be sent off at 30 second intervals.

Note if you miss your allocated time you will be sent off at the discretion of the Race Referee.

The following limitation applies to the Prologue

• No Disc Wheels or wheel covers

• No Time Trial specific helmets

• No Time Trial bars either specific or clip on

Tri Spoke or other deep dish wheels are allowed as long as the rim does not exceed 10cm.

Stage 1

Stage 1 will start at 1:30pm and riders will be sent off by grade.

Stage 1 is 50km for all grades.

Bonus time will be allocated to each grade on both primes for the first three sprint positions (1st – 3 seconds, 2nd – 2 seconds and 3rd - 1 second) and for the first five finish positions (1st – 5 seconds, 2nd – 4 seconds, 3rd - 3 seconds, 4th – 2 seconds and 5th – 1 second).

DAY 2: Sunday 8th May 2016

Yes, we know it's Mother's Day... so why not bring ya Mum along. I'm sure she'd enjoy watching a day's racing.

Stage 2

Stage 2 will start at 10:00am for all grades with 2 min between grades.

The course length will depend on grade:

• A, B, C, D will complete 100km (Note: A Water Bottle will be provided for riders on the Second Lap)

• E, F, G, Tandem will complete 50km

Presentation

Presentations will be held in the Hall in the Gunning Showground at 2:00 pm. Lunch will be provided for all riders and officials.

NSW Masters Road Championships

The championships were held on a hilly course near Orange over the weekend. Judging by photos of the finish, the road race ended at the top of a massive hill. Our star performer was Terry Moore who won the road race and was second in the criterium in the WMA6 category. Incredibly, she was beaten over the line by one WMA8 rider in both races (better get launch an enquiry into that one!). Slightly outdone was partner Mark Harris who got second in the crit and 12th in the RR. Not far behind were Peter Coll and Dom Rideaux.

Best of the M5s was Paul "Titanium" Francom in 24th with former winner Michael Payne and the inform Dave Mullens finishing soon after. Brendan Byatt was 15th in the M4 RR. Steve Blackburn didn't start the RR but he did come second in the TT. Steve Crispin was 10th in the M3 and Marc Vroomans 27th in a closely contested race. New member Anthony Brew was 16th in the M2 crit.

The club's hard men, those who prefer the race of truth to rolling your legs over in a bunch, brought home a swag of medals in the Time Trials today. Some didn't even enter the other events and instead saved themselves especially for the 30 plus minutes of purgatory. The medal haul included:

MM2 new member Anthony Brew missed out on bronze by nine seconds.

MM4 Brendan Byatt snagged the bronze! James Jordan came in 12th.

MM5 Tom Hartley took silver, an improvement of a few places compared with 2015; while Dave Mullens somehow rode strongly despite having done the crit and RR in previous days.

MM7 OWAIN TILLEY WAS SECOND! He also beat Kevin Goodman who's raced with the Vets and won B grade at Gunning in the past.

Interstate Events

• 2016 BATTLE ON THE BORDER

- 3-5 June

Now in its 8th year, the Battle of the Border cycling festival has grown to a notable multi-stage tour offering challenging racing in juniors, elite, masters and NRS divisions. The festival courses range from 50km to 150km, crossing challenging terrain and highlighting the beautifully unique volcanic caldera environment. Details at http://www.battleontheborder.com.au/.

RACE REPORT:

Old Federal Highway Graded Scratch – 23rd April

Thanks to Paul Welsh, Richard Bourne and Simon Milnes for marshalling duties and Simon Whitehead (First Aid). Also an extra thanks to Simon and Jarrad Milnes for bringing a chainsaw and removing a tree which was blocking one third of the course.

Note: if you do ride on an event course close to a scheduled event and notice a potential issue please notify the race committee or race director prior to the event.

I would recommend that riders ride "Road Grade" for Dairy Flat as "Stromlo Crit" grade is significantly different to Dairy Flat.

In A grade it was a fierce battle between Paul Connor, Paul Scherl and Peter Young for the points. Peter Young and Sean Ifland got dropped by a Paul Scherl attack and amazingly clawed back with Peter going straight on the offensive earning the 9 points for third. Paul Connor consistently gained points, 18 total giving him the win with Paul Scherl in a hard earned 13 point second place.

Michael McGurgan and Martin Graham went head to head in B grade both scoring 15 points with Michael taking first place on a countback, Steve Swenke completed the podium with 6 points.

D grade had a successful three man break establish early with Jamie McRae first with 15 points, Seymour Savell-Boss second on 11 points and Darren Garnon third with 8 points.

C grade was very competitive with some fast sprints, with Warwick Wilson taking honours totalling 15 points. Martin Horwood was second on 12 points and Terence Merrigan a respectable third with 10 points.

In G grade Paul Robey straight from the line stormed off the front, caught and passed F grade(take note Mr Handicapper) to take all the points with an impressive result(14 points). Tony Weir chased all race to gain second(9 points) with Bernie Crowe third on 7 points.

F grade was quite an even battle during the race between Stewart Stockwell second on a countback with 9 points, Mike Spoljaric on 12 points and David Witteveen claiming third also on 9 points. Mike Spoljaric showed his expertise by easily taking out the final sprint and overall victory.

E grade final sprint for was full of rider verbals and a breach of the AVCC race rules (Rule 8b to be specific);

b) Dangerous riding, including the practice of saluting by removing one or both hands off the bars at a finish, will not be tolerated and the referee shall discipline any rider whom he/she deems to be guilty of this practice, or any other act that endangers other riders or road users.

Note: Race Directors have to enforce the rules in the interest of safety.

To improve safety we should encourage riders to discuss safety issues with the race director and race committee. Sometimes riders are not aware that they are riding in a certain way and all they might need is a bit of friendly advice which could prevent an accident.

E grade was the biggest bunch with Bob Miller crashing late in the race but managed to remount and finish. Mick Donaldson took first place on a count back over Peter Lafferty who did an excellent ride to catch up after being held up in the crash. Linda Stals was third with 4 points.
