First Aid Training

Level 1 Sports Trainer

Sports Medicine Australia is running a course to train qualified first aid people to the level of Sports trainer level 1. The committee is willing to reimburse the registration fee of ACT Veterans Cycling Club members who complete the course and are willing to volunteer to go into a pool of qualified first-aiders who’ll be contacted to attend races that won’t or can’t be attended by a Sports Medicine Australia trainer. In this event the volunteer from the club will be expected to attend the race as a fully committed (ie non racing) sports trainer (first aider). In this situation reimbursement of expenses e.g. travel would be paid by the club.

This training of club members is not intended to change any of the current arrangements with Sports Medicine Australia for the provision of trainers (first aid) . However there are occasions when SMA trainers are not available. The use of club volunteers is to allow racing to go ahead with the usual insurance cover when SMA can’t provide full first aid cover.

The course details are below. Interested members should contact the ACTVCC committee with an expression of interest indicating a commitment to volunteer to act as an official first aid attendant at cycle races if required. As this training involves the reimbursement of the registration fee of $285 committee approval is required before committing to the training. Numbers are limited and the course starts in less than 4 weeks time.

Members who are trained and attend a race in a first aid capacity will also be eligible for reimbursement of the annual renewal course.

I want to say a big thankyou to the Vets club, and particularly those in B/C/D grades that have been so supportive over the years and the last few months in particular.

As most of you are aware, I will be heading over to Rio paralympics (via training camp in Italy). I'll be leaving on 11th August and will enjoy almost 3 weeks in the Italian sunshine in Montichiari, training hard at the local velodrome and nice quiet country roads. Then onto Rio with my first race, the pursuit, on day 1 (8th September). I then race every few days; the 500m TT, team sprint, road time trial and finishing with the road race on the final day.

The Vets racing has been a great way to get some road rides in with some great company along the way. I am sure some of you have backed off the pace at times just when I am about to admit defeat and drop off the back. The result is that I have pushed myself to the limit most weeks. Along with all the other training this has paid dividends and I feel like I am in the best form of my life.

So I'm excited about Rio, to see if I can push myself to new PBs and finish my (para) career on a high note. But with 6x world championship titles, paralympic gold and silver medals from London and 29/30 national titles I know I can finish satisfied whatever the result in Rio.

Hello Vets,

A follow up for this week's Bleat;

RACE REPORT:

Dalton – 30th July

On a beautiful sunny afternoon, not much wind and 11 degrees, 36 riders turned up to race. Some grades like C(11 racers) and E(8 racers) had good numbers while some other grades need a few more for a good competitive race. The course at Dalton is not a climbers course but offers enough up sections to test the riders and talk after the race was that it was hard. From the point of view of those at the finish it was a peaceful afternoon, we even had time to help a local lady search for a missing ferret.

A and B Grades raced together, with the exception of Steve Crispin who went off the front and won by over 4 minutes, an impressive effort. When I plug his numbers into my calculator it says average speed 41kph, not bad. Sean Ifland and Dave Mullins were second and third in A Grade. Roger Northcote was the winner of B Grade from Anthony Meredith and Mark Stevenson, but all the A and B Graders finished in a bunch except Steve Crispin off the front.

C and D also raced together with just 47 seconds separated the 14 riders at the finish after the long slog up the hill from the pub. Damien Copeland won C Grade from Seymour Savell-Boss and John-Paul De Sousa. Ian McVay won D Grade, only 11 seconds behind Damien.

E Grade was set up for the swoopers, David Gunther, Russell Marston and Neil David poking their noses into the breeze 50 meters from the finish after Kirsti McVay and Janette Koehler set the pace most of the way up the hill.

Polly Templeton won F Grade in a small field of four and Bruce Jones went around on his own in G Grade.

Congratulations to all who turned up and raced. By all accounts a nice day’s racing. A lot goes into organising these races and getting approvals, so let’s get out there and make all that effort worthwhile. Thanks to marshals David Steward-Thomson, Richard Hedley, Paul Welsh, Dougal Torrance, John Thorn, Alain Arbaut and Jim Cruden.
